This week I was invited to a group chat by my former work colleagues from the India office….
Hearing everyone’s updates on the group chat brought me back down memory lane.
Back in 2010, I remember being in that job, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience an interesting and varied corporate real estate role yet also feeling that sense of inner knowing and voice that said..
“I don’t want to be in this job for the next 1, 5 or 10+ years”
On paper, logically it didn’t make sense to walk away from that job yet in my heart and in my body, I knew that, that career trajectory wasn’t the right path for me.
At the time I was a workaholic and numbed out the inner knowing by staying busy and avoiding the feeling of misalignment.
Whenever the thought “this isn’t right” came up, I would berate myself for being an ungrateful privileged woman who should be so lucky to have a job in the first place.
Looking back, I could barely admit that I was on the wrong path let alone take action to figure out my next career move.
So often as women, we have a deeper knowing or intuition when something is “off.”
Yet we avoid admitting this because it can be uncomfortable/scary/confronting. And so we do whatever we can to avoid admitting this to ourselves…..
I’m curious, as you’re reading this….
Is there anything that’s niggling away at you? Like a stone in your shoe that’s always there?
These times are calling us to wake up and question how we are living, working and relating to each other.
I believe that more and more of us are being forced to feel the niggle and meet that deeper inner knowing within.
These times are forcing us to feel it all and meet the discomfort.
Whether you’re facing a niggle in your career, your personal life (relationships, social justice, health), parenting or anything beyond…..this week I invite you to meet the niggle.
Acknowledging these niggles can feel like an opening up of Pandora’s box and understandably are complex and hard. So it’s understandable for the mind to instruct the body to numb out and avoid having to deal.
Yet these niggles are a vital piece of the puzzle.
These niggles are an arrow pointing us in the right direction to see what’s really standing in our way of living a soul aligned life and career.
If you’re facing a niggle, particularly around your job, you’re in the right place.
Today we’re exploring what to do if you don’t want to be in your job for the next 1, 5 or 10+ years.
Important note: Whether your niggle includes where you’re living, your relationship, your health, your role in social justice or anything else, what I’m covering in this blog post also applies so keep on reading.
Part 1: Congratulations!
Firstly, kudos to you for clicking over to this blog and admitting that you have a niggle in the first place.
Admitting to ourselves that something isn’t working can be a hard first step to make.
Truth be told, once you know something it’s hard to un-know it and hard to continue to ignore it….
So congratulations for taking this important first step!
Is there anything that’s niggling away at you? Like a stone in your shoe that’s always there?
Part 2: Get curious with what the niggle is really about
For many of us the annoying, niggly feeling that’s being called to the surface during these times, can be a hard one to face….
Particularly when your niggle is around work and the fact that you don’t want to be in your job for the next 1, 5 or 10+ years can be a hard one to face.
Naturally your mind will try every avoidance strategy in the book to get you NOT to look at it.
Why?
Well, your mind knows what it’s dealing with in your current situation. Even if it’s less than ideal.
Your mind’s job is to keep you safe and secure. This does not equate with being happy.
When you begin to entertain the niggle, it brings up a lot of questions, doubt, uncertainty and unknown.
The very things your mind doesn’t like and wants to avoid and so it’s normal to stop looking.
Going back to my corporate days when I had an inner inkling that I was on the wrong path…
I avoided this with overworking, numbing out (with too much alcohol on the weekends) and avoidance (shutting down helped me try and keep the inner knowing in a tight little box).
Until one day it caught up to me.
During a business trip to India, I attended an early morning conference call and was publicly called out by a colleague for not doing enough for a project….
That call woke me up to the fact that I couldn’t avoid the inner knowing and feelings anymore and the dam wall finally burst – I felt it all. Finally.
Through feeling it all and meeting that discomfort I came to the truth my body wanted me to hear all along: I had to do something about my career and figure out another way.
For me I had a personally painful moment that cracked me up to the niggle.
For you it may be different, perhaps it’s these times we’re in, a challenging relationship, a feeling of contentment but being ready for the next challenge.
Whatever is cracking you open to feel your niggle I invite you to take a moment and become curious to what the niggle has to say and tell you.
Be intimate with the fears that arise, the unanswered questions you have, the heartfelt longings and desires you perhaps haven’t accessed before. These are all clues to answering the question…
“If I don’t want to be in this job for the next 1,5 or 10+ years, then what do I do?”
Part 3: Come back to the REAL you to figure out your path through the niggle
The foundation of my 1:1 work with clients is about getting R.E.A.L. This is the personal work that’s needed to navigate your way into a Soul Aligned Career.
Oftentimes people think that starting a new job or starting a new business is the answer, but honestly, it doesn’t work that way.
Starting with you and being intentional with what you desire to create is the key.
If you don’t want to be in your job for the next 1,5 or 10+ years I believe it’s important to do the deeper work to reset your foundation so that you’re building a career that truly matters to you.
Otherwise you’ll just step into more of the same challenges but simply in a different environment…..
Here’s a quick recap of what getting R.E.A.L means to me:
Reclaim: Unlearning the beliefs that keep us playing small so that you can own your uniqueness, strengths, gifts and self in the “never enough” culture we live in.
Express: Claim your lane and what you stand for you in your work. Express your gifts, voice, perspective in all areas of your life.
Align: Carve out your own path to your definition of success for this phase of your life and career journey.
Live: Embody the real you in your everyday, devoting to your desires and intuition so that you can live, love work and lead in sustainable, nourishing, liberatory and pleasure-filled ways.
The first step to coming back to the REAL you is to honour the natural gifts and talents that you have.
When you honour your natural gifts and talents you can begin to answer the question…
“If I don’t want to be in this job for the next 1,5 or 10+ years, then what do I do?”
If you’re wanting to figure out what your natural gifts and talents are, you can start by taking the free soul archetype quiz.
If you haven’t already done so, you can take the Soul Archetype Quiz to discover yours. Simply click on the icon below to be taken to the free quiz.
There’s no one in the world quite like you. You have a unique soul archetype that you’re here to express in the world.
Finding out your archetype can help you build on your strengths, be more of who you really are and do more of what you’re here to do.
Part 4: Allow yourself to explore + play
Once you have the information of who you are at a soul level, you’ll have the key information around what you’re here to express and share with the world. From this space allow the practical ideas of the “how” will begin to flow.
***Spoiler alert: I’ll be launching an intimate group experience designed to support you in getting clear + what you’re here to do so that you can finally make a soul aligned decision on whether to stay in your existing role or do something else. If you’re interested in being the first to know about this and getting access to some juicy first to know bonuses, you can pop your name over here on the waitlist***
