Connecting Mind Body Soul

Rational approach to cultivating your intuition

February 23, 2021

< back to blog home

When I was in my last full-time corporate job I remember getting the job offer.

In my head I know that I should take it:

It’s a great company

It’s a great opportunity

Others would love the chance to do this

On paper, everything appeared to be great but there was an inner voice that was telling me that:

It’s not the right fit

You’re not taking it for the right reasons

You’re going to get eaten alive in that environment

Guess what?

I ultimately didn’t choose to listen to that inner voice.

I thought to myself, “Screw it! I’ll do it, I’ll make it work, watch me.”

I took the offer.

Whilst I don’t believe there are mistakes in life, I do believe that it wasn’t the right place for me long term.

Even though the job wasn’t the best fit for me. I did learn a lot on the job.

One of the most important learnings from that corporate job wasn’t just the technical expertise I gained on that job but the lesson of listening to my intuition….

Can you relate?

Have you ever felt like you’ve either heard a voice, had an inner feeling or just simply had an inner knowing….that something isn’t quite right?

Or maybe on the flip side you’ve known that something is right but you’ve been unsure if you should just go for it?

Maybe you’re terrified of listening to your intuition because it’s coming out of nowhere and your brain is doubting and questioning it….

If you’re curious to learn more about intuition, you’re in the place. Let’s dive in….

If you’re curious to learn more about intuition, you’re in the place. Let’s dive in….

What is Intuition?

The dictionary defines it as:

The ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning.

Aka: knowing “something” without knowing how you know. You just do.

I believe that our intuition is a powerful skill that we ALL have.

We’re just a little out of practice using it and trusting it.

Your intuition is a powerful guide to your own inner wisdom and guidance on what is right and true for you.

And I believe it speaks to us in different ways with the goal of supporting us to step into great fulfilment and happiness.

Yet we live in a world that honours the rational and not the intuitive.

As Albert Einstein once said:

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

Which is why I think that so many of us are unfulfilled.

A recent Gallup study has said that 30% of workers are happy in their jobs and 70% are disengaged.

That is a huge percentage.

Considering how much time we spend at work, I think it’s such a shame because if you’re at work, you want it to be in something that matters to you.

It doesn’t have to be world changing or life changing but it does have to be something that you feel like you’re making a contribution through.

I believe that our intuition guides us on the right path — but many choose to ignore it.

When you ignore your intuition, that’s when you get further off track, you don’t learn the lessons, and you wake up wondering who the heck you are and how you landed where you are.

If you’re feeling off track, perhaps it’s time to reconnect with your intuition?

As a practical and rational person I like to test things out.

For me coming back to my intuition has been a journey but here are the things that have supported me in trusting my own inner knowing and most importantly — trusting my intuition.

Here are 5 ways you can begin to cultivate a relationship with your intuition.

Thing #1: Journaling

Most days I write in my journal. This is a stream of consciousness where I write anything and everything that’s on my mind.

Benefits: I get to offload all the mental chatter, questions, ponderings out of my head and onto paper which makes me feel lighter. Usually when I write, I figure out the answers to my questions and realise I’m overcomplicating and overthinking things — and that there’s a simpler solution to explore.

Thing #2: Gratitude

Every evening before bed, I recap the day and the top 10 things I’m grateful for. I do one specific note of gratitude for every finger.

Tip: I don’t rehash the usual things like health, my husband and kids, etc (otherwise it’s just passive). I get specific on what I’m grateful for, on that given day. For example:

I’m grateful I had a chance to have a 10 minute break on the roof

I’m grateful that my client had a breakthrough around her challenge on self-worth today

I’m grateful that my kids got to play with their friends at their house and socialise somewhere different etc.

Thing #3: Movement Practice

Thanks to my training at the School of Embodied Arts, I learned a movement practice to drop out of my head and into my body.

This has been a hugely beneficial way to slow down and honour how I’m REALLY feeling and move all the feels I have on any given day.

Benefits: Getting out of the head and into the body. Tapping into the wisdom that’s always available and omnipresent.

If you’d like a practice to tune into this, feel free to check out the Soul Aligned Woman Activation Workshop.

Thing #4: Being in nature

There’s something about being in nature, away from a screen, and disconnected from other people that is so restorative.

I find being in nature and slowing down to observe and notice the world through my five senses has helped my intuition come through immensely.

Benefits: You realise that you’re a part of the sacred ecosystem of life and that there is a greater force in life that connects us all beyond our egos and what we do.

Thing #5: Exercise

Moving my body always makes me feel like I’ve cleared the cobwebs out and like there’s more space for things to land.

Whilst exercise can be a bit heady – where we process our thoughts. When you’re exercising you’re present. To the moment and what you’re feeling, hearing and sensing around you.

And presence is a key factor required to cultivate greater intuition.

Benefits: You get to do something good for your mind, body and soul all in one go!

If you feel like you desire to deepen into your intuition, you can start your own experiment and play with any of the 5 suggestions above.

Start thinking about what your intuition is guiding you towards. Try it out for a week – explore it and see where it takes you.

You can start with baby steps.

Know that your intuition is one of the most powerful ways that you can get back on track towards a fulfilling life and career.

This is how to get back on track and get back to your path and purpose.

Your path is unique to you and that intuition is there for a reason.

Start listening and start trusting.

Before you go, I’d love for you to leave a comment below:

  • Do you use your intuition?
  • What stops or helps you trust it?
  • Which of the 5 ways are you going to give a try?

I’d love to know!

Wishing you a beautiful week.

With love,

Siobhan

  1. I have a TON of voices guiding me now…but I’m in the middle of a start up so there’s so much going into it. I don’t know that I listen to the intuition so often because it’s somewhat against what I’m doing. I haven’t really done any of the practices you suggest, but I do plan on a couple of them today as the weather is FINALLY nice and I need to get moving. I’m glad my intuition told me to pop over to you today! Have a great one!

Hi Jennifer, thanks for sharing how you are. I feel you on having a ton of voices guiding you. It can be tricky to discern which one to listen to. Let me know if you have any questions on the practices. I’d be keen to hear how you go! Have a great one too and enjoy that lovely weather 🙂
